Deixei que me alcançasse, e fui emparelhado com ele até o fim da raia, e subi a volta na mesma voga que ele, forte e lenta, até os últimos 250m, quando ele deu uma acelerada (ele já ia pela terceira). Levei o treino assim até o fim, acelerando nos últimos 250m da terceira volta, e dando duas largadas em movimento 3-3-10 pra acabar. Um dos livros que, sem nenhuma preguiça, li desde o começo, apesar de já ter chegado mais ou menos na metade, era sobre a Batalha de Salamina, a batalha naval que afastou os persas de Atenas, escrito por um historiador remador, sob o ponto de vista das trirremes, mil naus a remo se trombando num estreito. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;A principal fonte do livro é o antigo &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal"&gt;História&lt;/i&gt;, do Heródoto, escrito 50 anos após os fatos, em 430 a.C. Dei uma fuçada e achei num sebo talvez a única edição em português completa, traduzida direto do grego, da década de 80. Umas 500 páginas numa letrinha bem pequena, mas absolutamente fascinante, uma leitura muito divertida. Um mundo misterioso, com centenas de povos em diferentes estágios de civilização, com estranhos hábitos, crenças e rituais. É cheia de digressões sobre lendas, geografia, casos, e costumes, com as devidas ressalvas sobre o grau de confiabilidade das fontes. E a enorme importância dos oráculos, sempre tomados como absoluta verdade, sempre precedidos de sacrifícios aos deuses. Salvo uns poucos casos de oráculos corrompidos, nunca o oráculo errava, era mal interpretado na sua linguagem simbólica.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;A &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;História&lt;/i&gt; abrange todo o mundo conhecido na época. A Europa não tinha norte, acabava em descampados desconhecidos além do Danúbio. A Ásia acabava na Índia. A África, ou melhor, Líbia, a terra enorme a oeste do Egito, já teria sido circunavegada, passando-se pelas Colunas de Heraclés (Gibraltar), as terras das palmeiras e povos de pequena estatura, até chegar-se à Etiópia, terra dos homens mais altos e bonitos – segundo o Heródoto – , e cujos “trogloditas” eram os melhores corredores do mundo. O território desconhecido terminaria no grande Rio Oceanos, de existência questionada pelo primeiro historiador.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;Quando cheguei em casa com o livro, minha filha mais nova disse depois ter tido arrepios com a coincidência: tinha acabado de ver&lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal"&gt; O Paciente Inglês&lt;/i&gt;, no qual o &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal"&gt;História&lt;/i&gt; tem um papel muito importante, e ainda, visto um episódio de &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal"&gt;Seinfeld&lt;/i&gt; no qual o filme é ridicularizado pelo quarteto. Ou sincronismos, como preferem alguns. Os surpreendentes alinhamentos de fatos que fazem supor a existência de uma engenharia oculta, destino. &lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Os gregos antigos são tidos por pessimistas, em função de sua visão de mundo tornada evidente no esquema da tragédia: o oráculo prevê a desgraça, tenta-se contorná-la com as medidas mais drásticas, mas a profecia se cumpre da forma mais inesperada. O &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal"&gt;História&lt;/i&gt; está cheio de exemplos dessa estrutura, que não prescinde de um forte conteúdo moral na relação entre homens e deuses, que costumam premiar as virtudes e castigar os malfeitos, numa perspectiva de responsabilidade coletiva que atinge até povos inteiros, gerações depois. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;Estes mesmos gregos, que estão muito mais próximos de nós do que pensamos, inventaram o veneno e o remédio, descobriram a saída da prisão do destino: a metafísica. Não me lembro porque foi parar lá. Provavelmente um presente ao qual não dei atenção, só agora sincronizado. Não sou fã de ficção científica, pra mim um gênero um pouco infantil. O autor é George Gaylord Simpson, um dos maiores palentólogos do século XX. Tem um prefácio de Arthur C. Clarke, o famoso cientista, inventor e escritor de ficção científica, autor de “2001, Uma Odisséia no Espaço”, e posfácio de Stephen Jay Gould, paleontólogo e evolucionista de Harvard, o mais lido autor de divulgação científica do planeta. Junto com estes comentários a obra toma as proporções de uma ficção bibiliográfica borgeana (de novo) e o fascínio que proporciona muito se amplifica.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;No prefácio Clarke explica como tomou conhecimento da obra inédita, encaminhada após a morte do autor por uma neta sua, e conta que ia responder sua negativa padrão a manuscritos não solicitados, quando reconheceu o autor, uma dos cientistas que mais marcou a sua vida e obra. E a sua surpresa com o conteúdo. Comenta a elegante solução do autor para a viagem no tempo, um passatempo de cientistas e autores deste verdadeiro gênero de ficção científica, cheio de regras próprias para lidar com seus paradoxos, trabalhados nas lacunas da ciência, tanto em torno da possibilidade como nas conseqüências da produção de futuros conflitantes. E também a condição de solidão única alcançada pelo personagem, pior do que a do náufrago na ilha deserta ou do anacoreta tibetano que se empareda vivo. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;Gould interpreta a obra como um testamento científico e pessoal do autor, dizendo ser comum cientistas com verve ficcional exporem suas teorias e convicções não provadas sob a &lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;forma do romance, citando exemplos. E que a obra também manifestaria um sentimento de isolamento do autor na comunidade científica, e suas angústias existenciais humanas, relacionando a obra a um perfil detalhado de Simpson.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;O protagonista, um cientista da futura ciência da cronologia do século XXII, durante um experimento pelo qual expande um milésimo de segundo por cinco horas (apoiado no filósofo grego Zenão, para quem o tempo era particulado além da nossa percepção, dando a ilusão de continuidade) e é arremessado a 65 milhões de anos, no fim do Cretáceo, a época do declínio dos dinossauros e expansão dos mamíferos. Sabe que não tem como voltar, e constata quão diminuto fica o seu interesse na revelação dos segredos da ciência aos quais tem acesso (e assim refuta teorias com as quais não concorda), por não ter a quem contar. Depois décadas vivendo sozinho, acaba por registrar em pedra lavrada suas aventuras, que serão achadas décadas depois do seu desaparecimento, e narradas pelo Historiador Universal em um grupo arquetípico, formado pelo Homem Comum, o Pragmático, o Paeontólogo, o Geólogo, e talvez o Filósofo. Na segunda perna caiu bastante, mas tem que haver um desconto por ser o treino de quarta, uma situação diferente da segunda, depois do descanso de domingo. Fechei o segundo tiro com a média geral de 2'26.6", o que, considerando a intensidade do primeiro tiro, é um resultado muito bom. É enorme, e deixa o single muito pesado. Fui tentar fazer sozinho o que fizemos no oito, o mesmo tipo de perna rápida, no tiro de 4km a voga 20. Os primeiros 2km fui muito bem, em voga 20 pra menos, em velocidade inaudita para essa voga, em torno dos 2'20", fechando a primeira perna com média de passagem de 2'23.5", um recorde pessoal surpreendente. Mas me acabei completamente, e os outros 6km ficaram prejudicados, dando uma média geral de 2'29.1". Tudo certo no aquecimento, finalmente a remada certa, disse o voga. Uma ótima largada-treino, aceleradas, alinhados, partida rápida, saímos muito bem, emparelhados com uma leve desvantagem do barco ponteiro, eu remando relaxado, ouvindo os gritos da margem, até que pouco depois dos duzentos e cinquenta metros, o desastre: meu remo esquerdo fica preso na água, a enforcada mortal. O barco pára pelo tempo de algumas remadas. Nervoso, demoro pra tirar o remo da água e voltamos a remar, agora em último. O barco anda bem, passamos o segundo um pouco mais de um barco. No tempo corrigido provavelmente ficamos em último, ainda que tenhamos "encostado" virtualmente no primeiro a chegar, duas classes mais jovem que o nosso. A jabulani me pegou.
